Mark Sauter is an author and former investigative reporter and television correspondent whose work spans national security, crime, aviation safety, food safety and government security. He has been an investigative correspondent for the nationally syndicated television programs “American Journal” and “Inside Edition,” and has reported for KIRO-TV (CBS) in Seattle and the Morning News Tribune (McClatchy; Tacoma, WA). He co-founded APB News, an online news publication, and led its content operations. More recently, he served as an expert on the History Channel series “The Proof Is Out There: Military Mysteries.”
Sauter currently works as an investment banker and consultant serving companies in the defense and security sectors, as well as the publisher of Cyber Insurance News and Information.
With James Carafano of the Heritage Foundation, Sauter co-authored McGraw-Hill’s university textbook, “Homeland Security: A Complete Guide,” now in its third edition. The textbook was called “an indispensable reference resource” in a Washington Times review.
While at APB News, Sauter was dubbed one of the “kings of the minute-ly news” by The Washington Post.
His investigative reporting has taken him from North Korea, Greece, Guatemala, Cambodia and Moscow to locations across the United States, including the National Archives and presidential libraries.
Sauter has filed hundreds of Freedom of Information Act and mandatory declassification review requests over the years and been a plaintiff in open-records lawsuits, including against the CIA and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).
Among his journalism awards are the Radio Television News Directors Oldfield Fellowship for National Security Reporting, Best of the West Awards, Seattle Emmy Awards and regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.
Under Sauter’s leadership, APB News received numerous journalism awards. These included SPJ’s first Sigma Delta Chi Award for online deadline reporting, for its real-time online release and analysis of Frank Sinatra’s FBI file; a Scripps Howard award for its College Community Crime Risk report; an inaugural Investigative Reporters and Editors citation for online journalism; and an inaugural Online Journalism Award for “The Great Basin Murders.” APB News also won SPJ’s Sunshine Award for its fight to publish federal judges’ financial disclosures. The Judicial Conference, chaired by Chief Justice William Rehnquist, ultimately authorized their release. APB News also won two New York Press Club awards.
Sauter graduated from Harvard University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He commanded a U.S. Army Special Forces A-team (combat diver) and served as an Army infantry officer commanding a U.S. guard post in the Korean DMZ and leading missions inside the zone.
The DMZ War Blog, sister site of Need to Share News, covers the U.S.-North Korean conflict since the end of the Korean War in 1953. It is also produced by Sauter.
As co-founder and volunteer president of the POW Investigative Project, he manages a multilingual investigative reporting and crowdsourcing platform seeking answers about the fates of U.S. POW/MIAs believed alive in enemy hands during and after the Korean, Cold and Vietnam wars but never released or accounted for.
With John Zimmerlee, an expert on the Korean POW/MIA issue, family advocate and son of a Korean War MIA, Sauter co-authored “American Trophies: How US POWs Were Surrendered to North Korea, China, and Russia by Washington’s ‘Cynical Attitude.’”
