If you know something about any case on these pages — or about a case that is not on them — the fastest route is the one that reaches investigators and the national database at the same time.
Start with NamUs
NamUs, the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, is the only national repository for missing, unidentified and unclaimed persons. Go to Source ↗ find the case, note its NamUs case number, and use the case's own contact route. Source: Source ↗
Lead with that case number in every message you send about the case — to NamUs, to the agency, and to us. A tip with a case number attaches to a file. A tip without one is loose paper.
Then the investigating agency
Contact the agency named in the case entry, and give them the same case number.
Then us
Send it to producer@needtosharenews.com with the missing person's name and the NamUs case number in the subject line, if you want it on the record with someone outside the agency.
We are a news organization. We cannot dispatch anyone. What we can do is find the file, ask the questions a family cannot get answered, publish what checks out, and keep a case in front of people who have stopped hearing about it.
What to include
The missing person's name, and the NamUs case number if you have one.
What you know, as plainly as you can put it. Dates, places, vehicles, names. Rough is fine.
How you know it. Whether you saw it, heard it, or were told it, and by whom, changes what we can do with it.
Whether you have already told NamUs or law enforcement, and which agency.
Whether we may contact you, and how.
What we do with what you send
We read everything. We do not publish a tipster's name without permission. If information looks like it belongs with an agency, we will say so and tell you where it goes. We will not tell you a case is close to being solved, because we will not know that.
We do not publish theories about who is responsible for an unsolved case, and we do not publish the names of people who have not been charged.
